The Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU continues to work towards a stable European Energy Union, and results on priority topics, among which are the initiatives of the package with legislative and non-legislative proposals “Clean energy for all Europeans”. This was stated by the President of the National Assembly Tsveta Karayancheva, who opened the Meeting of the Chairpersons of the Energy Committees of the Parliaments of the European Union. The forum is held within the Parliamentary Dimension of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Bulgaria is guided by the principle of building an Energy Union to provide safe, reliable, affordable and low-carbon energy for all Europeans, noted Tsveta Karayancheva. She expressed confidence that the Energy Union can only be sustainable if it reflects the specifics of individual Member States and is based on equality, non-discriminatory approach, and technological neutrality.
The President of the National Assembly noted that the meeting of the Chairpersons of the Parliamentary Energy Committees of the EU Member States is devoted to important topics on which Bulgaria actively works as a predictable and reliable partner. Among them are the energy infrastructure in the Union and security of supply, the transition to clean energy in Europe and the market integration of renewable energy sources, pointed out Tsveta Karayancheva. Key issues of the Bulgarian Presidency are the establishment of a stable Energy Union, the legislative proposals of the package Clean energy for all Europeans, the targets for renewable energy by 2030, and the gradual and economically reasonable transition to a low-carbon economy, she stressed.
Promoting regional cooperation and good interconnection are vital to establish a secure, well-functioning and accessible energy system, said Tsveta Karayancheva. She noted that the European model in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy is also a good opportunity for the development of the economies of the Western Balkans countries. One of the main aspects of this process is the completion of the interconnection in the region, added the President of the Bulgarian Parliament.
The National Assembly is an example for an excellent dialogue with both the executive and the non-governmental sector - seeking and implementing long-term solutions for the energy sector through the prism of the Common European policies, noted Tsveta Karayancheva, and wished fruitful and constructive work in Sofia to the participants in the meeting.
The Chairperson of the Energy Committee Delian Dobrev defined the meeting of the parliamentarians as an important and interesting event within the Parliamentary Dimension of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. The topics selected for this forum are of great importance in the course of the negotiations on the adoption of the Clean energy for all Europeans legislation package, and will contribute for a better communication and awareness on the priorities of Europe’s agenda, he said.
Delian Dobrev said that Bulgaria is actively involved in the establishment and implementation of the EU energy policy. He underlined that the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU seeks to reflect on the main elements of the general approach and to ensure that Member States will not be loaded with additional administrative burdens, they will retain their flexibility in formulating and implementing their national plans in the field of climate and energy, and at the same time will guarantee the European objectives for establishment of a European Energy Union. Key speakers in the first session of the forum – ‘Energy Infrastructure and secure supply’ are Vladimir Urutchev, MEP, member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) of the EP and Catharina Sikow - Magny, Head of Unit for Networks and Regional Initiatives, Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission.
