The Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates among EU member states every six months. The rotating Presidency is held for a period of 18 months by the so-called Presidential Trio, consisting of three countries with a common political programme. The main tasks of the Bulgarian EU Presidency are the following:
- to participate in determining the political priorities and the Programme of the Trio;
- to coordinate and chair the work of the Council of the EU for a period of six months;
- to play the role of a mediator and an honest broker in order to build consensus among the Member States on a broad range of topics.
